History
In the mid-1800’s, Toledo was a disease infested swampland. A Catholic priest sought help from the Sisters of Charity of Montreal, “Grey Nuns”, to care for the sick, the poor and the orphans. The Grey Nuns responded immediately to the call.
In the winter of 1855, less than one month after their Toledo arrival, the Grey Nuns took in their first orphan and a month later, their first patient. As the Grey Nuns served Toledo’s disadvantaged, the community supported the Grey Nuns, establishing a positive relationship which continues to this day. The first of thousands of talented and dedicated physicians joined them in their compassionate mission, which is the foundation Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center has been built upon. The Mercy Health mission centers on the belief that all life has meaning and we are dedicated to extending the healing ministry of Jesus by improving the health of our communities with emphasis on people who are poor and underserved. Mercy Health – St. Vincent Medical Center continually grew throughout the twentieth century and expanded its services to meet the medical needs of its community and region. One highlight of Mercy Health – St. Vincent Medical Center’s extensive growth and impact on medicine occurred when it drastically changed the face of trauma care for the critically ill and injured throughout the region. On August 15, 1979, the Mercy Health – St. Vincent Medical Center’s Life Flight went into service making it the first emergency air medical service in Ohio, Michigan and Indiana. It was one of two services in the country to first carry an emergency physician and a specially trained flight nurse on each flight. In 1984, Life Flight became the first program in the country to use the Dauphin helicopters which could carry two patients and fly at the speeds of 180 MPH. Mercy Health – St. Vincent Medical Center is a Level 1 Trauma Center for children and adults, home to 5 Life Flight air ambulances, holds the highest designation for treating high risk mothers and babies, and is an accredited Chest Pain Center. Upon joining Mercy Health, you become a vital part of the largest health system in Ohio, and the 6th largest Catholic healthcare system in the country.
Mercy Health – Northern Region Residency Programs are a key example of the values of the Mercy Health – St. Vincent mission. Mercy Health – St. Vincent has been a teaching hospital since the late 1800s and continues the tradition today with its nine competitive residency programs. Mercy Health – St. Vincent Medical Center takes a leadership role in providing quality graduate medical education. The institution is a clinical teaching site not only for our residency programs, but also for UTMC residency programs as well as for medical students from reputable institutions, such as the University of Toledo, College of Medicine and the Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine.
