Academic Affairs

Regional Academic Affairs serves to provide oversight and guidance for all medical education programs at Mercy Health – St. Vincent Medical Center.  We support resident/fellow research and scholarly activity with a full-time Academic Research Coordinator, Library staff and a contracted Biostatistician.  We are committed to excellence and believe in training and graduating competent, compassionate, highly skilled physicians. Mission

Mercy Health St. Vincent is dedicated to providing residents and fellows with holistic resident centered education in an environment that meets the needs of our learners and patients.  Bolstered by our faith based values and mission, we serve our patients best when we serve our residents best.  To that end, our mission is to train residents to graduate prepared to use their knowledge and  skills to for the betterment of their patients, including use of medical knowledge, the art of care and communication, professionalism, lifelong learning and development and commitment to advocacy and equity.  Such mission can only be met in an environment that emphasizes both traditional medical training (knowledge, skills) and resident well-being and fulfilment.

Statement of GME Commitment

Mercy Health St. Vincent Medical Center, and Mercy Health Toledo, commit to provide the necessary administrative, educational, financial, human and clinical resources.  This commitment is evidenced by our long standing history of accredited GME as well as our ongoing commitment to these requirements as evidenced, in part, via the examples below:

Administrative resources: The SI will commit to the necessary financial and time support for the DIO, Regional Director of Academic Affairs, GME Office, Simulation and Library Staff/resources as well as program directors and program coordinators.

Financial resources: The SI commits to the necessary financial resources for competitive resident salaries, program operations and staff, faculty educational time, scholarly activity resources and other needs.

Educational resources: The SI commits to the necessary physical and online learning resources, effective classrooms/learning labs/simulation center/library, faculty support, feedback amongst other resources.

Human resources: The SI commits to generous health and time away benefits (family leave, maternity/paternity leave, vacation), goal of an environment free from harassment and intimidation and the HR resources to address alleged violations, adequate provisions for safety and security, rest and fatigue mitigation spaces/policies and GME resources for resident wellness amongst other resources.

Clinical Resources: The SI will provide directly or arrange reasonable access to clinical rotations and sites to meet ACGME requirements and provide top tier compassionate care.  This commitment also includes access to ongoing strategic faculty planning to identify current or potential faculty gaps and collaborate with the SI and market leadership to resolve such gaps as soon as effectively possible.
